http://imdb.com/title/tt0341384/Perhaps the reason why this movie is getting such a bad rap is mainly a fault of its well-meaning, but still incoherent style and narrative structure. I have not read any articles on this movie or interviews with the director to know what his overt intention was, but in the end I think the movie falls short of its mark due to Kim's perennial fixation on obsession, whether it was his intention to delve into this subject matter or not. On most levels, obsession is a largely private affair, and any exegesis of obsession enmeshed within the loaded geopolitical situation that is now Korea would require a broader vision and canvas matched with a technical command of story telling than any that Kim has been able to provide here or elsewhere. However, one thing that I must praise Kim for is the reality with which he portrays military life in South Korea. It is, in my view, the grittiest, down-to-other depiction on the silver-screen of life as a grunt doing mandatory military service in Korea. I should know, since I've done my two years' service, as no doubt Kim also has. The situation might be unreal (a loose-cannon grunt suddenly acquiring the killing skills of Jason Bourne) but the military's reaction to it certainly wasn't. The ineptitude of the commanders to stop the problem, the fear of the soldiers and the conflict it breeds within, and, most important of all, the corporal punishment that gets amplified as it spreads down the chain of command.

Một ông già đánh cá 60 tuổi sống ẩn dật trên một chiếc thuyền tồi tàn lênh đênh dọc theo bờ biển. Bên cạnh ông là một phụ nữ, người được ông nuôi dưỡng từ khi còn nhỏ và cũng được ông “bảo vệ” trước thế giới bên ngoài. Rồi ông yêu cô ta lúc nào không hay, yêu một cách thầm kín và tự chuẩn bị hôn lễ cho mình ngay khi cô 17 tuổi, cái tuổi mà phụ nữ được phép kết hôn.
Không khí chỉ sống động vào mỗi ngày chủ nhật, khi họ cho thuê chiếc thuyền để kiếm thêm tiền sinh sống. Rồi nhịp điệu cuộc sống của hai người đã thay đổi khi có sự xuất hiện của một người đàn ông thành phố, một sinh viên trí thức bị lôi cuốn bởi vẻ đẹp và tính cách lạ lùng của cô phụ nữ trẻ. Và đối với người đánh cá già, những giấc mơ về đám cưới trở thành nỗi ám ảnh khôn nguôi. Ông sợ sẽ đánh mất cô dâu của mình…
Những hình ảnh trong phim của đạo diễn cá tính xứ Hàn Kim Ki Duk thường là một thế giới bình yên với thiên nhiên như một tấm phông nền đậm nét và tinh khiết, và các nhân vật thường ít thoại, có cuộc sống lặng lẽ nhưng nội tâm vô cùng mãnh liệt và hay gặp phải những biến cố bất thường.
Nhân vật người phụ nữ trong The Bow mang vẻ mỏng manh yếu ớt còn ông già đánh cá lại cục cằn và hơi thô lỗ… Thông qua những hoạt động thường ngày như việc ông già thích được tắm cho cô ta, hay những mật mã bí mật, một thứ ngôn ngữ được sáng tạo ra để hai người giao tiếp với nhau là những đòn bẩy của cảm xúc, là phép ẩn dụ của nỗi cô đơn, sự tự do, vẻ tội nghiệp. Ngay cả cái chết cũng có mối liên hệ với một điều gì đó… Đó là một chủ đề đắt và điển hình của Kim Ki Duk.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0341384/Perhaps the reason why this movie is getting such a bad rap is mainly a fault of its well-meaning, but still incoherent style and narrative structure. I have not read any articles on this movie or interviews with the director to know what his overt intention was, but in the end I think the movie falls short of its mark due to Kim's perennial fixation on obsession, whether it was his intention to delve into this subject matter or not. On most levels, obsession is a largely private affair, and any exegesis of obsession enmeshed within the loaded geopolitical situation that is now Korea would require a broader vision and canvas matched with a technical command of story telling than any that Kim has been able to provide here or elsewhere. However, one thing that I must praise Kim for is the reality with which he portrays military life in South Korea. It is, in my view, the grittiest, down-to-other depiction on the silver-screen of life as a grunt doing mandatory military service in Korea. I should know, since I've done my two years' service, as no doubt Kim also has. The situation might be unreal (a loose-cannon grunt suddenly acquiring the killing skills of Jason Bourne) but the military's reaction to it certainly wasn't. The ineptitude of the commanders to stop the problem, the fear of the soldiers and the conflict it breeds within, and, most important of all, the corporal punishment that gets amplified as it spreads down the chain of command.

Những hình ảnh trong phim của đạo diễn cá tính xứ Hàn Kim Ki Duk thường là một thế giới bình yên với thiên nhiên như một tấm phông nền đậm nét và tinh khiết, và các nhân vật thường ít thoại, có cuộc sống lặng lẽ nhưng nội tâm vô cùng mãnh liệt và hay gặp phải những biến cố bất thường.
Nhân vật người phụ nữ trong The Bow mang vẻ mỏng manh yếu ớt còn ông già đánh cá lại cục cằn và hơi thô lỗ… Thông qua những hoạt động thường ngày như việc ông già thích được tắm cho cô ta, hay những mật mã bí mật, một thứ ngôn ngữ được sáng tạo ra để hai người giao tiếp với nhau là những đòn bẩy của cảm xúc, là phép ẩn dụ của nỗi cô đơn, sự tự do, vẻ tội nghiệp. Ngay cả cái chết cũng có mối liên hệ với một điều gì đó… Đó là một chủ đề đắt và điển hình của Kim Ki Duk.
